Central West Lachlan Landcare (CWLL) have re-scheduled the Standard Mental Health First Aid Course that was to be held next week.

CWLL and Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP) are pleased to be offering Mental Health First Aid training, but would prefer to make it accessible to as many people as possible, hence the postponement until 8 and 9 September 2021 when we hope that face to face training will be more practical, given our current COVID-19 restrictions.

This course will be led by Rural Mental Health Coordinator, Philip Worrad. Phil works over the Parkes and Lachlan Shires.

The Standard Mental Health First Aid Course is a 12-hour accredited course that is delivered over two days.

This course is available to adults who wish to learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

This course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

The course fee is $100. This covers the course paperwork, morning tea and lunch. This course can sometimes be several hundred dollars. We are trying to make it as accessible as possible.

As a basic guide the course covers the following sessions on Day One:

• Mental Illness (risk factors, prevalence and impact)
• Mental Health First Aid (MHFA Action Plan)
• Depression (signs, symptoms and interventions)
• MHFA Action Plan for Depression (crisis first aid for suicidal thoughts and behaviours, crisis first aid for non-suicidal self-injury, first aid for depression)
• Anxiety problems (signs, symptoms and interventions)

Day Two:

• The MHFA Action Plan for Anxiety Problems (crisis first aid for panic attacks; crisis first aid after a traumatic event; first aid for anxiety problems)
• Psychosis (signs, symptoms and interventions, first aid for psychosis)
• Substance Use Problems (signs, symptoms and interventions, crisis first aid for severe effects of substance use)

This is a nationally recognised program. CWLL are committed to improving the health and response to mental health through all of our programs and workshops.
